The Joy List ~ 27 June 2010

June 27th, 2010 Posted in The Joy List

This Sunday’s post will be a quiet edition of the Joy List.  Everyone is busy with summer holidays and high school graduations and the busy-ness of not being busy.

Here are the things or moments that brought me the most joy this past week.

1.  A quiet morning after a much-needed twelve-hour sleep.

2.  A lazy breakfast of wholegrain bread and jam, a bowl of sliced fruit, a plate of scrambled eggs, and a big mug of tea.

3.  Watching an episode of “The Waltons.”

4.  Coffee on the port with G.

5.  Talking to my dad on Father’s Day.

6.  Hearing from an old student who had just graduated and wanted to thank me for the help I gave her in my class.

What moments have recently brought you joy?

  1. Gasp! Watching an episode of The Walton’s. I used to watch that show all the time but it’s not on any of the channels I get. I loved watching that show. What brought me joy this week? I was working on a project for my business that didn’t feel like work. What a pleasure it was and is to be getting paid for something that I enjoy so much. I was indoors more than I would have liked because I was working to a deadline, but with the doors open I found myself listening to the birds singing more than I usually do. That is something I always appreciate.

    • Sad but true fact about me, Davina: I love The Waltons. I was so tickled to find some episodes on youtube on that morning of the sleep-in and big mug of tea.

Thank you for sharing your joys this week. How blessed you were to have work that did not feel like work. And to do it with doors open, to the sound of twittering birds, this is lovely indeed. :)

  2. The Waltons! Is that really you in your icon photo? Joy this week: I had an agent compliment my writing, my kids are here, watching my son play rugby league, smelling scrappy, watching our vege garden grow (you can see the difference day to day), lots of things have made me happy this week. Talk soon, Simon.

Thank you for sharing your joys, Simon. And congratulations for having an agent compliment your writing – weren’t you just thrilled?

  3. Hello Carla. :)

If you make it to Oz by the end of this year you will be having a double dose of summer holidays and high school graduations. I do hope the visa application is coming along okay.

It was wonderful for me to see the relief on my seventeen year old daughters face, after she had completed her final mid-year exams this week. There’s still more to go over the next couple of months, but the end of school is in site.

The episode of an old TV show that I enjoyed this week was “Bonanza”. I hadn’t seen it in years! I think it may be even older than The Walton’s!

    Have a wonderful week. :)

    • My apologies, Joanne, that this went up a day late. I felt sure I’d clicked “approve”! At any rate, thank you so much for sharing your joys this week. It sounds like you and your daughter have a wonderful relationship; she’s lucky to have you!

G and I are quite excited about the prospect of two summers. Would probably be more excited if this visa process wasn’t such a bear.

Have a wonderful week, too. x

  4. Chania Girl,
Those are pretty special moments – when someone takes the time to thank us for helping them (and you, sweet friend…give so much…).

JOY…for me this week: a group training session that brought lots of insight for me, basketball with my kids, going out to dinner as a family on Friday night, and the sunshine (after lots of rain).

And…I’m smiling now as I let these thoughts float over me (thank you…).

    • Aw, Lance. I do not feel that I give near enough. You and so many other wonderful souls do so much to brighten my (and other people’s) corner of the world!

Thank you for adding your joys to this week’s list. You have been able to enjoy the gift of family, and that is a wonderful thing.

  6. I got the most beautiful, touching email from my daughter on Father’s Day. She’s 14, and *so* much a teenager, so it was really unexpected and most wonderful.

    • Jay, that is wonderful. Were you totally surprised? She must have realized somewhere along the way that her dad really is pretty cool! :)

  7. Claire - Gratitude Connection says:

Spending time with my sister, sharing a delicious choc chip muffin, catching up with friends, exploring new ideas, the sense that I’m on the right path, cuddles with my precious children. A wonderful week, I’m excited to see what joy the new week brings. Have a fantastic week!

    • Your additions to this week’s joy list are so ebullient, Claire. And you are anticipating even more blessings! I hope you have a beautiful week.

  8. It was a week of joy for me too. Yes, graduations. My girl graduated from high school. I know it’s cheesy, but there was a moment (do you know the movie, 13 Going on 30? In it two old friends collaborate on some photos of high school grads dancing and a reunion – very natural, joyful photos of real people’s lives – Hollywood-real of course). Well, I’m watching my daughter and her friends lined up in front of their limo, dresses and tuxedos, all smiles, perfect summer evening, their lives ahead of them, posing for a picture and it was indeed a moment. I felt it. We were witnessing a moment they would never forget and I was aware of it’s preciousness. Wow. It goes on my joy list of the year.

    • Those moments you described are so rare, and it is even rarer to realize the rarity as it’s occurring. You were doubly blessed to experience both. Thank you for sharing this joy (and your daughter’s joy) with us.

  9. *smiles* Pa Walton always reminded me of my dad.

My moments of joy this week included:

    homemade lemonade

    listening to my dog snore

    organizing my CDs

    being told I am loved

finding the perfect picture to go with a blog

Hoping the coming week just oozes joy for you!! :)

    • Thank for the joyful hopes. I hope the same for you!

Homemade lemonade is scrumptious. Listening to a dog snore makes me giggle … especially if it is a wheezy cat who likes to hang out with me on our back veranda! :) And you ARE loved. xxx

  10. My husband and I worked together in the garden one evening when the air was so crisp and clean I want to drink it in big gulps. It was a simple, ‘glad to be alive, experience.

  11. Hi Carla,
Thank you for this moment to reflect on what gave me joy this week. Here’s what gave me joy this week:

Giving readings at the local tea shop and having some of my regulars tell me that what I’d told them the last time had happened.
Visiting my 81 year old mother unexpectedly at her home and seeing how she lit up over having me there.
Spending two whole luxurious days at the beach with a friend taking in the beauty and slower pace of life.

    Thank you!

    • Two whole luxurious days at the beach?! Oh, Angela, this is just what you needed, isn’t it? How wonderful for you. And so wonderful, too, to have your gifts affirmed by the reports from your regulars at the tea shop. That’s a truly gratifying experience. Wishing you (and your mom) a wonderful week. x

  12. Thanks for this joy list. Perhaps it’s the season, but we and many others we follow seem to be writing a lot about balance and joy in simple things these days. It’s been inspiration enough for us to slow down a bit. 3 trips to the pool with our 2 year old daughter this week brought us all a lot of joy.

    • It’s so great to see a new face here. So very glad you stopped by. Thank you for sharing about the simple joy of spending three days with your two-year-old daughter at the pool. Were any photos taken? Or are they forever captured in the photograph album of your memory?

Looking forward to seeing you again. :)

  13. This is why I love visiting your blog CG. You make me think of the good stuff.

I love your quiet morning after 12 hr. sleep. Good on you.

My favorite moments this week were:

*Having a home made latte, looking out the window.

    * Watching brilliant documentaries about the universe & multiverse. I am becoming more of a geek by the moment :)

    * Preparing for my cousin’s visit. She’s coming from England and I’ve never met her before.

    * Having newly painted fences. Makes the backyard look so fresh :)

    • Oh, Manal. You are not a geek, but if you are, you are in good company because G and I love us a good documentary. We actually seek them out. :)

Thank you for sharing your joys: a homemade latte, the excitement of an anticipated new visitor, a beautiful fence around one’s backyard – these are all well worth delighting in and celebrating. x

  14. In a week that felt a bit uphill as it began..I ended with a heart overflowing with gratitude for so much JOY sprinkled throughout each day in various forms of wonder and delight:
What stands out in my mind is:
-I won tickets to a concert at a venue I’ve always wanted to go to
-While at an awards banquet and admiring the gorgeous flower arrangement on the table, I wondered what do they do with the arrangements after the banquet? and just as I completed the thought, I was told I could take the flowers home..they are in full bloom and the boat smells lovely with their fragrance!
-A friend sent me a very thoughtful package to show how my friendship is appreciated and included gifts that were my favorite
-Another friend surprised me by paying me back a bit of money I lent a long time ago…money I asked the Universe to supply for an out of budget bill…

The list goes on and on..wonder and delight in each day as long as I keep my heart open..even if it hurts a bit, even if I doubt..and God meets me, the Universe greets me..all day long!!!
