About Me
I am a woman who has dared to live her life differently. Five years ago I left my corporate job with nothing lined up and decided to see what paths might open up if I let fate, intuition, and the good of the Universe lead me. Six months later I found myself boarding a plane to Chania, Crete, to take part in a TEFL Certification course. And six months after that I was living in a small town on the Greek mainland teaching English to 120 Greek students. Wow – how much can happen in a year!
Three plus years later I am still in Greece (but back in Chania), still teaching Greek students and now also teaching American students online. I live in my two-bedroom dream home on the Cretan hillside. And I married the love of my life in September 2009. Sounds like a fairy tale doesn’t it?
I would have thought so, too, at one time. If five years ago someone had come up to me and said, “You’re going to move to Greece, meet your husband and go more places than you’d ever dreamed of,” I would have found it very hard to believe. Thankfully, somewhere along the way I did start believing. This believing began with believing in myself.
It hasn’t been a fairy tale. While it is true that all of these successes have occurred, they have not come without a lot of sweat, tears, and heartache, as well. But these travails and trials have gone hand in hand with also believing in myself … and trusting that “all things work together for good.” Therefore, the taste of this cup I sip is all the more sweet because I have crushed the grapes, trod the winepress. I have even sometimes been the grape.
I am a bookworm, fabulous cook, lover of nature, and red wine drinker. I walk for exercise because running is just too much work. I have to line things up. My favorite movies still include my favorites as a kid. I cry every time I watch Steel Magnolias. I laugh every time I watch Wedding Crashers. I want to be a published author one day.

Hello Chania Girl!
Wow!! I just read your story and Ilove it! It’s so awesom how you followed your heart and allowed life to lead you to what you prboably only had dreamed about!
I look forward to reading more of your blog.
Hi, Keith. Thanks so much for stopping by today … and for taking the time to leave a thoughtful comment.
I’m glad that you enjoyed reading a bit of the story of how I ended up where I am. I am still amazed by it sometimes and love hearing other people’s stories of how they, too, one day decide just to take some risks and see what happens. Which leads me to ask: What’s your story?
Looking forward to seeing you again.
I have loved what I have read so far – Can’t wait to see where life takes you next. Life is truly rich when you let go and… live! As you found yourself in Greece – I let go after college and spent a year in Prague teaching English. It wasn’t planned, it just… happened!
You know, I have always wanted to visit Prague … and still haven’t! But it’s on my and my husband’s list of places to go. What was your experience with Prague? Did you enjoy teaching EFL there? Bravo you on letting go and living!
So glad you stopped by today and so glad you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far. Will look forward to seeing you again.
Applause please! Tremendous open honesty in this page. You tell us right from the word go that you’ve dared to live your life differently. Now we’re hooked. And then a journey with you through recent times and we come to the great part for me, “It hasn’t been a fairy tale”. That’s awesome because the whole self-help and personal growth field focuses on getting, achieving, dreaming, suceeding. You tell it as it is here. You dare to live differently but that’s not always a fairy tale. That overview is something many should take a wisdom and reality when they chase their dreams. But you have still gone to prove that Greece is the word!!
John
John, I appreciate your comment. If there’s one thing I am aware of every day that I write this blog is that my life isn’t a fairy tale, and I don’t want to give anyone the illusion that is. So I was extremely pleased that you read this in what I was trying to convey.
I agree with you that “the whole self-help and personal growth field” can sometimes, in its focus on manifesting and achieving and dreaming, blur out the bit that says, “Hey, and by the way, this ain’t always easy.” Hopefully, as I continue to share myself and my thoughts in this space, more of the “not so fairy tale” part of my story will be told … and encourage others that even if there is a big nasty witch, a wicked stepmother, or even a fire-breathing dragon, the story can have a happy ending. Hmmm … maybe it’s a fairy tale after all?
